This month, Substack is going on a virtual tour to help connect writers exploring similar topics together.
The Substack category tour will act both as a meeting place for writers to connect directly over Zoom, and as a showcase for the wide variety of writing happening on Substack within a given category. Today, we are visiting stop #5: news, science, sports, and climate
Participate in today’s thread:
Think of today’s thread as a roll call of all the writers in the room. We will use the thread during our live session to get to know one another and after the session, to stay in touch.
Introduce yourself! In one sentence what do you write about on Substack?
Respond to fellow writers. During the showcase, reply to writers’ comments.
No need to include a link to your publication. When you hover over any writer’s name in the thread, you will find their writer and reader profile.
When we finish today, it’s over to you to stay connected. Subscribe to fellow writers’ publications and reply to their welcome email with a note to keep in touch.
For sure! I definitely wouldn’t be able to write my daily politics newsletter without the experience of writing on deadline and looking for the stories beyond the story since fashion is rarely just about the clothes. Thanks everyone for being such wonderful company during my showcase!
Yes, there are definitely some crossover skills between fashion and politics! Both fields require strong communication skills, the ability to influence others, and an understanding of human behavior and trends. Additionally, the fashion industry is often influenced by cultural and societal trends, which can also play a role in politics. However, there are also many unique challenges and differences between the two fields. It's been a fascinating transition!
Hi there - I am based in Kansas City. I spent 17 years as a national corro for Reuters; now contribute to the Guardian and am launching The New Lede, an environmental news outlet for the Environmental Working Group. We're looking for freelancers, new tips, and community! Appreciate Substack!
Hi Carey, this sounds so interesting! Would love to chat about what kind of freelancers you're looking for - I'm a freelance writer specialising in climate justice and have worked with multiple advocacy NGOs in the past.
Hi Boaz, if you look to the right of someone's name here in the comment thread, you should see in grey text the name of their publication: you can click on this as it's a link! It should take you to the publication and subscribe. Let me know if you have any problems.
Hi there, not sure if you're replying to me specifically, but you can see my substack UnSpun here. https://careygillam.substack.com/ The New Lede news outlet is still in development and will be launched in late April.
You can see our not-yet-ready for prime time Twitter account here. https://twitter.com/thenewledenews and our website will be up in about a month. It's so much work just getting all the technical and legal ducks in order, but we hope and intend that we will be bringing to light meaningful environmental stories that otherwise might go untold.
Good morning! I'm writing from Washington, DC, where I've worked several years for environmental nonprofits. I write a newsletter called Planet Days that compiles the top seven climate news stories every week: https://planetdays.substack.com/
Hi Brandon! I'd love to connect. I write a climate newsletter introducing concepts in climate justice for concerned citizens, with a section of climate news. Seems our work overlaps a lot! My email is casshebron@gmail.com if you'd like to connect and chat
Check me out if you're interested in water related news from California, focused on one major river. The American River supplies (read past tense) the Sacramento River, and thus all of CA, all the way to LA.
Hi Jenny, would be great to connect! I'm a freelance writer on climate justice and also run a newsletter on the same topic. My email is casshebron@gmail.com
Good morning from the US, and ThirtyNine - where every week we look at how the built environment impacts climate change. Buildings represent 39% of all carbon emissions, and each week we talk about how to reduce that impact. (https://thirtynine.substack.com/)
Hey Chris, I'd love to connect and chat! I'm a freelance writer running a newsletter on climate justice and always looking for collabs/crossovers with other climate newsletters! My email is casshebron@gmail.com if you're interested in chatting further

Hi everyone! It’s Michael — for those who missed me during the showcase: I write Supercreator, a publication about politics for the creative class. I cover issues like housing, health care, education, justice, immigration, climate and how these policy topics shape the creative experience in the new economy. If you’re interested, you can sign up here: https://www.supercreator.news
Hey y'all, I'm dialing in from Michigan. My newsletter is quite small and experimental at this point - on the inner and outer dimensions of climate action (including the role of faith). ruminateandmove.substack.com
Greetings from Seattle, where my newsletter focuses on human and natural history around the Pacific Northwest. My goal is write stories that I hope will encourage people to slow, pay attention, and develop deeper connections to place. Recent topics include pelicans, spring (highlighting George Orwell), and poetry in stone (about Robinson Jeffers). https://streetsmartnaturalist.substack.com/
Certainly! Crafting my daily political newsletter would be a challenging endeavor without the invaluable expertise acquired from meeting deadlines and exploring stories in depth. After all, fashion rarely revolves solely around clothing. I extend my sincere thanks to everyone for their delightful company during my presentation!
Hello from California. As a professional artist, I take an intimate view of the American River, from the middle, not the shore: the cultural and natural history of the creatures and humans who depend on this vital source. I use my drawings and photography to help people understand complex issues.
Substack folks! There was a climate newsletter mentioned towards the end that does a deep dive on one climate pollution source per issue but I missed the name. Can anyone help?
Glad there are some other 'Europeans' here! I'm a Brexit refugee living in Austria. Writing about cricket, rugby, motorsport and golf. I have a long career in magazine journalism behind me (Reuters, Autosport, Reader's Digest, Golf Punk + many) and have also written four travel/self-help books. Great to meet so many faces today!
Hello from Greece, i'm a local journalist at the island of Crete, curating a weekly newsletter about serious things that go unnoticed + my own views. I didn' t speak today because i'm not very fluent with english, but it was a very good experience!
Trio names are a unique way to capture the essence of a three-person group, symbolizing their unity and shared dynamic. These names often reflect the group's collective vibe, whether it's adventurous, quirky, or deeply sentimental. Drawing inspiration from pop culture, nature, or personal jokes, trio names can be as simple as "The Aces" or as creative as "Sun, Moon, and Stars." They offer a fun way to strengthen the group's bond while showcasing their individuality as a team. A great trio name becomes more than a label—it’s a testament to their shared journey and connection.
This virtual tour sounds like an amazing opportunity to connect with like-minded writers and exchange ideas! Looking forward to discovering new perspectives and building a stronger community around shared passions.
