This month, Substack is going on a virtual tour to help connect writers exploring similar topics together.
The Substack category tour will act both as a meeting place for writers to connect directly over Zoom, and as a showcase for the wide variety of writing happening on Substack within a given category. Today, we are visiting stop #5: news, science, sports, and climate
Participate in today’s thread:
Think of today’s thread as a roll call of all the writers in the room. We will use the thread during our live session to get to know one another and after the session, to stay in touch.
Introduce yourself! In one sentence what do you write about on Substack?
Respond to fellow writers. During the showcase, reply to writers’ comments.
No need to include a link to your publication. When you hover over any writer’s name in the thread, you will find their writer and reader profile.
When we finish today, it’s over to you to stay connected. Subscribe to fellow writers’ publications and reply to their welcome email with a note to keep in touch.
Hi there - I am based in Kansas City. I spent 17 years as a national corro for Reuters; now contribute to the Guardian and am launching The New Lede, an environmental news outlet for the Environmental Working Group. We're looking for freelancers, new tips, and community! Appreciate Substack!
Good morning from the US, and ThirtyNine - where every week we look at how the built environment impacts climate change. Buildings represent 39% of all carbon emissions, and each week we talk about how to reduce that impact. (https://thirtynine.substack.com/)
Hello! Thank you Substack for featuring my space blog Jatan's Space (https://blog.jatan.space/about) in today's virtual tour. I write popular science articles on space exploration and the world's only Moon exploration newsletter as humanity prepares to return to the Moon! Happy to connect with other writers and readers and answer any questions.
Good morning and hello from Connecticut. I am a speculative fiction author writing on substack about my family's journey to a net-zero lifestyle. https://lookatthelabel.substack.com/
thanks Substack for the opportunity to present my newsletter "Colorado Mountain Running & Living" sarahrunning.substack.com. I ran out of time to give my Substack shoutouts. Hi everyone! It’s Michael — for those who missed me during the showcase: I write Supercreator, a publication about politics for the creative class. I cover issues like housing, health care, education, justice, immigration, climate and how these policy topics shape the creative experience in the new economy. If you’re interested, you can sign up here: https://www.supercreator.news
Hey y'all, I'm dialing in from Michigan. My newsletter is quite small and experimental at this point - on the inner and outer dimensions of climate action (including the role of faith). ruminateandmove.substack.com
Greetings from Seattle, where my newsletter focuses on human and natural history around the Pacific Northwest. My goal is write stories that I hope will encourage people to slow, pay attention, and develop deeper connections to place. Recent topics include pelicans, spring (highlighting George Orwell), and poetry in stone (about Robinson Jeffers). https://streetsmartnaturalist.substack.com/
Hello from California. As a professional artist, I take an intimate view of the American River, from the middle, not the shore: the cultural and natural history of the creatures and humans who depend on this vital source. I use my drawings and photography to help people understand complex issues.
Substack folks! There was a climate newsletter mentioned towards the end that does a deep dive on one climate pollution source per issue but I missed the name. Can anyone help?
Glad there are some other 'Europeans' here! I'm a Brexit refugee living in Austria. Writing about cricket, rugby, motorsport and golf. I have a long career in magazine journalism behind me (Reuters, Autosport, Reader's Digest, Golf Punk + many) and have also written four travel/self-help books. Great to meet so many faces today!
Hello from Greece, i'm a local journalist at the island of Crete, curating a weekly newsletter about serious things that go unnoticed + my own views. I didn' t speak today because i'm not very fluent with english, but it was a very good experience!
Absolutely! Composing my daily politics newsletter would be a daunting task without the invaluable experience gained from meeting deadlines and delving deeper into stories. After all, fashion seldom revolves solely around garments. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their delightful companionship during my showcase!
Very interesting Carey! Would love to hear what you think about the increasing monopolisation of food (and well everything really, ha).https://alightmotiontips.com/
It's exciting to witness Substack's initiative in bringing writers together through their virtual tour, much like how CapCut, a video editor, enables creators to connect and collaborate on multimedia projects. Just as Substack fosters a sense of community among writers exploring similar topics, CapCut empowers video editors to join forces, exchange ideas, and create compelling content. Looking forward to the camaraderie and creativity that this platform and tour will undoubtedly inspire! https://capcutproapk.org/
Hi! I'm afraid I missed the tour yesterday as I was in a climate march, but am catching up now. I'm Cass, I'm a climate activist based in Belgium and a climate communications consultant. I run The Green Fix, which is a newsletter for anyone who wants to help build a greener and fairer world but is busy and bombarded with information. https://thegreenfix.substack.com
My apologies for missing this today! My flight home yesterday was canceled and I’ve been at the airport since 4am today and just now through security. I’ll come back here and connect in the comments this weekend once I’m home.
Thank you Katie, Hannah, and Substack. Very good to see real diversity here. As briefly mentioned in the speed showcase, Okay Then News is about highlighting media misinformation, typically using their own sources, and how they change over time. It all started with those WMDs...

Michael! What a route from fashion to politics... I bet there are a LOT of crossover skills there?
Wow I love that anecdote Jatan about getting input from an Apollo 17 astronaut! Maybe you could share the link to that comment?
